More than 450 submissions on speed management plan

More than 450 public submissions have been made during the four-week consultation period about speed limits near schools, maraes, and on high-risk roads in Carterton and South Wairarapa.

The proposal asked for feedback on lowering the speed limit around several schools and marae, and a speed limit review on roads designated as high priority across the two districts.

The consultation on the interim speed management plan is being jointly led by South Wairarapa District Council [SWDC] and Carterton District Council [CDC].

More than 40 roads, including parts of roads, in Carterton district are listed in the consultation document, with a few speeds recommended to remain as they currently are.

Proposed speed reductions include parts of Carters Line from 100kph to 80kph, Hughes Line from 100kph to 60kph, Kokotau Rd from 100kph to 80kph, and part of Ponatahi Rd from 100kph to 80kph.

There are also seven “proposed permanent speed limits with local priority” in Greytown, five in Featherston, and 20 in Martinborough.

The proposals include reducing the speed to 30kph in parts of Jellicoe St, Cork St, Cambridge Rd, and around the Square in Martinborough.

There are 19 on the list of roads in other parts of South Wairarapa.

Portions of Cape Palliser Rd are recommended to reduce in speed from 100kph to 80kph or 60kph. Cape Palliser Rd, between 250m northwest of Tilson Avenue and 105m south of Seaview Avenue, is recommended to reduce to 30kph.

Other roads mentioned include Lake Ferry Rd, Ponatahi Rd, Western Lake Rd, and Te Miha Crescent.

The two councils will now collate submissions and set a date for hearings. After the hearings, submissions will be discussed, including suggested changes resulting from feedback. Changes resulting from public feedback are expected to follow. – NZLDR

  1. What I don’t understand is why they haven’t done anything about the rimutaka hill road?

That hill has been killing people since the 1800s.

  2. Fix the roads. Open road speed limit back to 100km. Ditch the hopelessly utopian road to zero.
    Stop trying to control us.

  3. I thought cars were made safer today than the old days 😕 when the speed limits were put in place 🤔. Let’s stop being a nanny state and just keep the roads maintained properly.
