Masterton’s Queen Elizabeth Park has received a Green Flag Award for the fourth year running, among 20 parks across New Zealand to receive the award this year.
Masterton District Council community facilities and activities manager Corin Haines said the award was a testament to the careful planning and hard work of the council’s parks and open spaces staff and contractor Recreational Services.
He was delighted the Green Flag status had been maintained.
“I know within Masterton the phrase ‘the jewel in our crown’ is common for Queen Elizabeth Park – but it is genuinely a stunning open space for the community to enjoy,” he said.
“QE Park has been a hub for Masterton for many years, and we hope it will continue to be for many more to come.”
Mayor Gary Caffell, a staunch supporter of Masterton’s open spaces, said he was proud to see the council’s focus pay off for the park.
“As many will know, I’m a bit of a walker, and I’m passionate about our parks.
“I couldn’t begin to count the number of times I have walked alongside and through Queen Elizabeth Park, and I can honestly say that every time I do, I am struck by what a spectacular centre
for the town we have here.
“Kudos to the team who continue to maintain this amazing asset and the members of the community who advocate on its behalf.
“For those who haven’t visited the park recently, I really encourage you to take a wander during Parks Week.”
Parks Week will take place nationwide from March 4-12.
This year, the council and community groups are hosting events including barbecues, guided park tours, pop-up play trailer sessions, disc golf, and waka ama.
