Carterton residents have been invited to have their say on the council’s Eastern Growth Area Structure Plan.
An online survey will be open until Monday, June 13.
Residents can also print out a copy or pick one up from the council office on Holloway St.
Survey participants would be asked if they own land in the plan area and whether they intend on developing their land in the future.
The Eastern Growth Plan extends from Park Rd to Moreton Rd and includes the southern area where Premier Beehive is.
Participants would also be asked what their appetite is for contributing to the cost of completing infrastructure upgrades to enable development.
Two community meetings would be held on the issue: one today at 5.30pm at the old courthouse, and another on June 11 at 1pm at the Carterton Events Centre foyer.
It is projected the urban area of Carterton would need to accommodate about 1000 new houses from now to 2043.
As a result, Carterton District Council is planning for where to accommodate the increasing population, new housing, and businesses.
The council’s growth strategy, published in 2017, identified the eastern side of the Carterton urban area as the most suitable location and direction for new greenfield development.
This was due to its proximity and accessibility to infrastructure facilities and services.
In January 2021, the council published a proposed structure plan for public consultation. It included four options for community feedback: that the council act as enabler for development, act as an intermediary, or as a developer.
The council agreed in August last year to act as an enabler and intermediary. — NZLDR
