Karaitiana just cruising through

Cruize Karaitiana of Masterton has yet again done his hometown proud on the blind audition of talent show ‘The Voice Australia’, turning not one but two of the judge’s chairs – Rita Ora and Jessica Mauboy – with his own rendition of ‘Carry On’ by Kygo, a track that features Ora.

Karaitiana said the blind audition was “crazy and nerve-wracking”, but watching the judges turn around was something he will never forget.

“I was that kid who would watch the show on a Friday night, eating fish and chips in the lounge with my family, dreaming of what it would be like if that were me. When I finally got my moment, and it was my turn – it was everything I had dreamed of and more,” he said.

Karaitiana first came to public attention in 2013 when he starred on ‘New Zealand’s Got Talent’ – receiving a standing ovation during his audition for the song ‘Fast Car’ by Tracey Chapman, which he dedicated to his late sister Shanice Karaitiana.

Ever since performing in a country music competition at the age of six in the Masterton town hall, Karaitiana always knew he wanted to be a singer from that first time he stepped on stage, he told the Times-Age.

Although the 32-year-old artist now resides in Queensland, Australia, Karaitiana said he wouldn’t be who and where he is today without his family back home in Masterton.

“The reason I’ve been blessed with the opportunities that have come across my path is purely down to the foundations that my friends and family back home instilled in me from such a young age,” he said.

“I’ve always had so much support from those around me and for that, I am so grateful. I feel incredibly privileged to be in the position I am, and I want the younger generation back home to know that they can do and be whatever they want in life and to put no boundaries on their dreams,” Karaitiana said.

For those wanting to follow in his footsteps, Karaitiana said the music industry is tough but also rewarding one.

“Coming from a small town, it can be really intimidating wanting to pursue a career in music, but just know you are just as talented as anyone else no matter where you are from. Life is always going to challenge you, but it’s those challenging moments that build character.

“Dream big – and chase your dreams.”

Although ‘The Voice Australia’ is not airing on New Zealand television, Karaitiana’s audition can be found on YouTube.
