Masterton residents were met with a strong burning smell in the air yesterday morning, which raised some questions about its origin. Masterton District Council [MDC] said its source was the “normal aroma associated with heating bitumen for asphalt,” during extensive work on the Ngāumutawa Rd and Renall St roundabout. An MDC spokesperson said the work is essential, and traffic diversions will happen during this time. The work is due to finish on April 28. Ngāumutawa Rd lane is being closed one week at a time, and several diversions on Pownall St, Cornwall Rd, Akura Rd, Kibblewhite Rd, Upper Plain Rd, and Chamberlain Rd are in place. After the work is completed, the section of Renall St that runs from the roundabout to College St will be resealed. PHOTO/KATE JUDSON
