Road rehab reminder

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi [NZTA] has issued a reminder that rehabilitation work on State Highway 2 Chapel St in Masterton is due to start tomorrow, and could last for more than seven weeks.

Weather permitting, contractors will work on Chapel St between Jackson St and the Lincoln Rd roundabout from Sunday, April 21 until Thursday, May 2, followed by Chapel St between Michael and Russel streets from Sunday, May 5 until Tuesday, May 21.

The final two weeks are allocated as contingency days.

The project involves the full rehabilitation and reconstruction of the road, sections of which will be excavated to a depth of around 400mm so a new structural asphalt base can be laid.

One side of Chapel St will be closed day and night throughout the work schedule, meaning vehicles must detour down Dixon St.

“Once completed, these works will significantly enhance the strength of SH2 Chapel St, making it more resilient to potholes and traffic damage,” an NZTA spokesperson said.

“This will not only improve the road’s lifespan but also enhance the overall safety of all road users.”

Timed to minimise disruption for businesses and drivers as much as possible, the work will be done at night between 9pm and 4am.

No work will be done on Friday and Saturday nights.

Because the work is weather-dependent, timeframes may change in the event of bad weather.

Light vehicles will need to detour down Dixon St, and heavy vehicles will need to detour using Ngaumutawa Rd when possible.
