KiwiRail has confirmed that its work on Featherston’s Fitzherbert St level crossing is now complete.
The project began on 4 January, and a spokesperson said that it was completed at around 4am yesterday morning, a couple of hours ahead of schedule.
Both vehicle and pedestrian traffic had been diverted via SH3 during this time, including the temporary movement of the bus stops near Quinwah Takeaways.
KiwiRail crew have been on the clock 24/7 since starting the project, which is part of a wider array of safety improvements being made to 30 public road level crossings between the Remutaka Tunnel and Masterton.
The Wairarapa line is closed for another week, until 14 January, while KiwiRail completes drainage work in the Remutaka Tunnel and re-railing and re-sleepering in the Maoribank Tunnel.
