Wellington-based singer-songwriter Ebony Lamb is set to take the stage in Featherston this Saturday as she makes her way up the country to perform seven shows to celebrate the release of her debut self-titled album.
Before deciding to strike out as a solo artist under her own name, Lamb spent over 10 years making albums and touring with her critically acclaimed alt-country band Eb & Sparrow.
“I’ve always been really taken with music, ever since I was a child we sang as a family and at school, and then later, I think music had a huge influence and outlet on my formative years growing up in Hawke’s Bay,” Lamb said.
An artist who straddles several genres, Lamb told the Times-Age that she describes herself as a “soulful, authentic, indie, folk, pop, alternative singer-songwriter”.
Her new album was made in collaboration with two well-known Kiwi modern musicians, Bic Runga and Kody Nielson, and she’s performing with her band, “who are very amazingly talented, jazz-trained and in a lot of other musical groups”, Lamb said.
“The three of us have really made a strong dynamic and have been performing together since last year, doing a bunch of touring around the country. Mostly, the sound is a strong and new feel – we’ve worked hard to make the show the best it can be, everything is really wrapping around my voice, which I’ve been told has a real ‘pull’ at live shows.”.
On the night, audiences will be treated to an easy-to-eat menu and curated wine list designed by Martinborough’s Mesita Wine Bar – which Lamb believes is important to make it a successful night for local businesses.
“I’ve performed in Wairarapa many times and really love it here. The last time I played at Kiwi Hall with my former band Eb & Sparrow, it totally sold out, it was brilliant,” she said.
Lamb advises young musicians embarking on a career in the music industry to enjoy the journey of making music and the adventure of learning about other genres, cultures, and sounds.
“There’s a big world out there, and there’s really something for everyone, not just what’s available through mainstream avenues,” she said.
“Music is a practice, and it’s really true that when you practice your craft it gives you opportunities not only to create amazing new tunes but be ready to work with others when the opportunity arises. Music is a release, anytime, for the rest of your life regardless of what level your music pursuits land at – that’s a gift.”
The gig is on Saturday, November 4, at Featherston’s Kiwi Hall, with the bar opening and food available from 6.30pm, and the show starting at 7.30pm and finishing at 10pm.
