New year, new tradition set for Cobblestones

Visitors and locals are invited to celebrate the start of the new year in the grounds of Greytown’s Cobblestones Museum at its inaugural Family Picnic Day, to be held today.

The day, which Cobblestones Museum hopes will become an annual tradition, will be “very casual” and provide something for everyone, Lynn Bushell, one of the primary organisers said.

“We invite families to bring their own picnic and enjoy”, she said.

“There will be plenty of outdoor games for the children to play, but if that sounds too energetic after a hectic Christmas, then you can wander through the beautiful gardens and historical village buildings, stories and exhibits of pioneer life instead.”

Entry to the picnic is by koha, and funds raised go toward the upkeep of the museum, which celebrated its 50th birthday last year.

The day will be “a great way for families to connect”, Bushell said.

“There’s not much open on New Year’s Day, and there is something really appealing about packing up your favourite food, snacks and fresh summer fruits, finding the perfect place to set up and creating new family memories,” she said.

“Bring your own seats and picnic blankets, but please no dogs. And bring some cash – we’ll have delicious Devonshire teas, a sausage sizzle and other light refreshments for sale.”

Gates open today at 10am and close at 3pm. For up-to-date information, check the Cobblestones Museum Facebook page.
