Annual breast cancer appeal in the pink

Volunteers were out in force yesterday raising money for the Breast Cancer Foundation’s annual Pink Ribbon Appeal, and they’re hitting the streets again today.

The volunteers in Masterton fundraising for breast cancer research, education, advocacy, and patient support were stationed outside the three major supermarkets, Ten O’Clock Cookie, and Food for Thought.

Masterton and South Wairarapa mayors Gary Caffell and Martin Connelly both support the campaign.

Caffell said there was no hesitation in supporting the Pink Ribbon Appeal and noted that statistics show that each year around 35 people in Wairarapa are diagnosed with breast cancer while eight will die from it.

“Let’s enhance our reputation as a caring community and give generously to this worthy cause,” he said.

Connelly shared the sentiment and encouraged everyone who can help with the cause to do so.

“It is time for us to come together and support those who have recently been diagnosed and are currently going through treatment,” Connelly said.

Area coordinator Debbie Mckeown has been participating in the appeal for 20 years and said this year has been successful so far, adding that there’s the option of donating via text or online if people want to participate but don’t have cash on them when they encounter a volunteer.

Today Volunteers can be found at the following locations:

Masterton: New World, Countdown, Pak’nSave, Ten O’Clock Cookie, and Food for Thought

Carterton: New World

Martinborough: Kitchener’s Cafe; Neighbourhood Cafe, P&K Jellicoe and Texas St entrances, and Village Café and Bar

Greytown: Fresh Choice

Featherston: Super Value, and Cést Cheese.

Online donations can be made through pinkribbonappeal.org.nz or by texting ‘PINK’ to 2447 to donate $3.
