The Wairarapa Sports Fishing Club [WSFC] is all geared up for its annual tuna and kahawai tournament at Castlepoint this weekend.
The event is running on Saturday and Sunday from 7am until the afternoon, with the fish weigh-ins to determine prize winners taking place between 4.30pm and 5pm on Saturday and 3.30pm to 4pm on Sunday.
WSFC weigh master Dave Cameron said he’s expecting to see a good turnout for the event.
“I would say we will probably see around 70 anglers,” he said, although he noted that “it’s very weather dependant, so if the weather is really good, we could see up to 150 anglers”.
“The competition allows for people to fish off the shore or fish off a boat, and we have some good prizes available.”
Anybody who catches a tuna, kahawai or a rare bill fish is eligible to win cash prizes.
The third, second and first place prizes for catching a tuna are $200, $300, $500 respectively.
The third, second and first place prizes for catching a kahawai are $100, $200 and $300 respectively.
The prize for catching a bill fish at a minimum weight of 90kg is $1000 cash.
Anyone wishing to register for the event can do so at the clubrooms at 38 Jetty Rd, Castlepoint, tonight between 6pm and 8pm, or on Saturday between 7.30am and 9am.
The club captain will also provide a briefing on the event at the clubrooms at 8pm this evening.
