Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre has celebrated a Christmas surprise with the hatching of a kiwi chick to mother Manawa [who continues to tend to a sibling egg] and father Mapuna. The photo shows the as yet unnamed new arrival with its attentive dad. Having had its annual day of closure yesterday, the wildlife centre is open again today from 9am to 6pm.
