The annual fun run fundraiser for Masterton Intermediate has raised a whopping $52,500 this year.
The event – held last Friday – included an obstacle course for kids to run through, along with water slides, coloured chalk, water sprayers, and cargo nets on the school grounds.
MIS teacher Juliet Stewart said the event started 12 years ago and has since become the school’s sole fundraiser each year.
“Children get sponsorship from whanau, friends, and door-knocking,” she said.
“Every child is encouraged to raise some money, with the highest student this year achieving more than $1000.”
The funds will help support students to participate in EOTC [education outside the classroom] activities, and will also be used to purchase new school sports equipment and classroom supplies.
“The whole community supports us, and we have the local fire brigade come and join in the fun,” Stewart said.
“For many students, it’s one of the highlights of their year, and it’s a great way to end the term.
“We are the longest-standing school in New Zealand that holds this event, and we continue to do it because it is so successful and way easier than selling other items.”
Previously, Stewart said, funds have been used to pay for things like the school’s outdoor playground, and the highest amount raised to date was $57,000.
