Power-ful gale disrupts connections

The gales that ripped through the region earlier this week resulted in over 4000 households losing their power at some point, with the less fortunate among them still without electricity yesterday.

As of 3pm yesterday afternoon, there were still 44 customers in Wairarapa without power, down from 76 at 11am, a spokesperson from Powerco told the Times-Age.

“Since the height of the winds overnight Sunday and into Monday, Powerco field crews have restored power to 4718 Wairarapa customers,” the spokesperson said.

“A total of 4762 customers have experienced an outage of some kind, of varying durations, in Wairarapa since Sunday night.”

The biggest outage reported was north of Riversdale around Otahome Rd, where 14 households lost power at 7.30pm on Sunday.

The spokesperson said they were still disconnected at 3pm yesterday.

“These 14 customers remain without power due to sections of lines down and broken cross-arms that need to be repaired.”

On Ōpaki’s Mikimiki Rd, 11 customers had also been without power since 2am on Monday, after a tree brought down lines, the spokesperson said.

Powerco head of network operations Caz Haydon acknowledged “how frustrating it is to be without power, particularly for an extended period of time”.

“So I’d like to personally thank our customers who are without power for their patience and understanding while we work to fix the damage and reconnect you,” he said.
