A person trapped under the wheel of a tractor in South Wairarapa has been airlifted to hospital.
Emergency services converged on Kahutara’s Pahautea Rd after reports of a tractor roll shortly before 1.30pm yesterday.
Life Flight Westpac Rescue Helicopter subsequently transported one person in a moderate condition to hospital.
First responders said the tractor driver had been mowing grass on a stop-bank next to the road when the accident happened.
The driver reportedly tried to leap clear of the machine as it flipped but was pinned under one of the tractor’s wheels, suffering injuries to the lower half of their body.
Featherston and Greytown fire brigades attended the scene, using airbags to lift the tractor and pull the driver free.
WorkSafe said it had been advised of the incident and was making initial inquiries.
It is at least the second such incident to come to WorkSafe’s attention over the past six months in Wairarapa.
In August last year, a person was critically injured when a tractor rolled over them on a Lake Ferry farm.
The farm worker was reportedly moving cattle when the accident happened on a remote section of the property.
Last month, national media reported a fatal accident in Southland.
Emergency services responded to a tractor that rolled on a farm in Tuturau, and police later confirmed a man was found deceased at the scene.
