One person was transported to hospital after a two-vehicle crash near Kaitoke that closed SH2 Remutaka Hill for five hours.
The crash was reported to police at 5.15am yesterday on SH2, near Kaitoke and Marchant Road.
A spokesperson for police confirmed that one person was in a serious condition following the crash, while Wellington Free Ambulance confirmed it attended the scene and that the patient was transported to Wellington Hospital.
A spokesperson for Te Whatu Ora confirmed that, as of midday yesterday, the patient was in a stable condition in Wellington Hospital’s emergency department. There were no other injuries.
Initially, only one lane was closed with stop-go traffic, but this was extended to a full road closure, and motorists were advised to delay travel plans.
The police spokesperson said both lanes on SH2 needed to be blocked to clear the road and carry out a scene investigation.
Waka Kotahi informed commuters at 7.40am yesterday that the road between Waterworks Rd and Marchant Rd was closed, and this was extended to include Remutaka Hill at 8.20am. The hill and SH2 reopened to traffic at 9.15am, and drivers were told to expect some delays as traffic cleared.
The circumstances of the crash are under investigation. The police’s serious crash unit conducted a scene examination ahead of an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
The police spokesperson said that, in general, a number of factors are considered in a crash investigation, “some of which include the speed the vehicle is travelling, the conditions – which include weather – and the driver’s fatigue”.
