Sun, scarecrows and a school fair was a thoroughly good way for thousands in the region to spend their Saturday.
Gladstone’s Scarecrow Festival celebrated 25 years this year, with the winning entries announced at the Scarecrows Big Day out at Gladstone Primary School.
This year’s theme for those crafting the perfect scarecrow was ‘tradition’, acknowledging the farming history of warding predators away from farmland with a human-like sculpture.
Taking away the top spot was Chris Black, whose attention to detail and commitment to this year’s theme of tradition won the hearts of the judging panel.
Gladstone Primary School principal [pictured enjoying a refreshing dunk] Belinda Bunny said thousands of people attended and that it was great to see many families enjoying themselves.
“It was outstanding in every way. The weather was perfect, and the crowd was incredible,” she said.
“There were lots of great comments about the quality of stalls, and the live music made for a really nice vibe and atmosphere.”
Because it was the 25th anniversary, Bunny said there was a large focus on traditional games such as gumboot throwing, sack races and cowpat bingo.
Although the total amount fundraised for the school hadn’t been calculated yet, Bunny said she was thrilled to say the auction alone raised almost $11,000.
“It’s amazing, and we just have so much thanks to the businesses and families who supported us.”
