A woman facing serious drug charges will reappear in Masterton District Court today.
The 24-year-old, arrested at what police described as a “gang-affiliated address in Carterton” on Tuesday, appeared before court magistrate John Bunny yesterday.
She was remanded in custody overnight, with court duty lawyer Ian Hard requesting a note for segregation.
The woman’s friends and family in the public gallery were visibly upset as she was stood down.
She is facing one charge of possessing a class A drug – methamphetamine – for supply, which carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1975.
In a statement on Tuesday, Wairarapa Police said its “precision targeting team” arrested the woman during a pre-planned search warrant at a Carterton property and indicated further arrests are likely.
However, police confirmed yesterday, that no further arrests had been made and inquiries were ongoing.
In the bust, police seized over 600 grams of methamphetamine during the search, equivalent to 33,000 doses, with an estimated street value of $230,000. Close to $37,000 cash was also seized.
Detective Senior Sergeant Philip Skoglund said that removing such a large amount of methamphetamine from the market may have prevented several hundred thousand dollars’ worth of social harm.
“This seizure is a great result. We are committed to disrupting the supply of illicit drugs in our community,” Skoglund said yesterday.
The woman is due to reappear for a bail hearing in Masterton District Court today.
