Advisory group for disabled

Masterton District Council is seeking expressions of interest from community members to join a Disability Advisory Group that will provide the council with advice, information and recommendations on disability inclusion and accessibility. The group will be made up of up to 12 members, including two elected members [Mayor Gary Caffell and councillor Marama Tuuta], up to four iwi representatives, and six community members appointed by a selection panel through the expressions of interest process. “Disabled people and their whānau face accessibility obstacles every single day,” Caffell said. “We believe it’s our responsibility to work in partnership with the disabled community to remove those barriers.” Group members will attend at least four meetings a year, and further input may be requested through additional meetings, emails, or surveys. Interested parties can visit mstn.govt.nz and search ‘Disability Advisory Group’ or email [email protected] for more information. Applications should be made before Friday, May 17.

Preparations reccommended

Department of Conservation has advised those planning to stay in Jumbo Hut to prepare by bringing various provisions. The firewood at the hut has been reported as wet, so they suggest taking fire starters. Also, guests are encouraged to bring their own cookers due to the lack of cooking facilities at the hut. This is because the gas cookers at the hut need servicing.

Stormwater work extended

Work on the Featherston stormwater project has been extended and is now expected to finish tomorrow. Today shoulder closures will remain in place during the day and from 9pm to 5.30am, SH2 Fitzherbert St [between Wakefield and Lyon St] will be closed at night. NZTA advise vehicles will be required to detour. Between 9pm and 5.30am, traffic will be unable to access Daniell St from Fitzherbert St as the intersections will be closed on either side of the road. Access will be available via Revans or Fox streets. NZTA and the Wellington Transport Alliance want to “thank the public for their patience and understanding as work crews work hard to complete these essential stormwater repairs”.
