SH2 closures

The Waingawa roundabouts at Wiltons Rd and East Taratahi Rd and at Cornwall Rd and Norfolk Rd are closed between 8pm and 5am until Thursday to allow for chip sealing to take place. A signposted detour is in place on local roads.

Wind warning

MetService has issued a strong wind watch for Wairarapa and Wellington. The alert was in place from 10pm last night and is expected to finish today at 10am. Drivers are urged to take care when crossing the Remutaka Hill and NZTA has asked motorists to take extra care, given “the bad weather will coincide with peak morning traffic”. “Commuters are urged to drive according to the conditions and be prepared for hazards such as wind-blown debris and tree falls. Truck and van drivers, towing vehicles, and motorcyclists must be aware of the conditions and plan their travel accordingly.” More information about the strong wind watch is on the MetService website: metservice.com

Power outage

An unplanned power outage occurred in Clareville yesterday at about 8.45am. Powerco said that 366 customers were affected by the cut. Although the cause of the outage is still unknown, the company said electricity was fully restored to all those affected, with the last people being reconnected at 11.30am. Restaurant fire

Masterton restaurant Saint Sebastian was evacuated on Friday night after it was enveloped in black smoke. Fire and Emergency [Fenz] Wairarapa assistant commander Craig Cottrill said the fire took place in the extraction system in the roof space above the kitchen. “We got the call at 7pm from a member of the public,” he said. “Our crews managed to extinguish the fire using a hose, and it took about 90 minutes.” The restaurant is expected to reopen on Thursday.

Car crash

A single-vehicle car crash was reported to police on Sunday at 4.29pm. The crash took place on Upper Waingawa Rd and a vehicle that collided with a fence, a spokesperson said. Two people suffered minor injuries as a result.
