Fares to rise

Regular commuters to Wellington from Wairarapa could soon pay $16 more per week. The Greater Wellington Regional Council [GWRC] will discuss a potential 10 per cent increase to public transport fares in tomorrow’s council meeting. The Annual Fares Review will take into consideration the operation costs of public transport as well as reducing pressure on rates and debt funding. GWRC said a fare increase of 10 per cent is required to partially cover public transport costs that are anticipated to rise by about 19 per cent in the next financial year. The outcome of the meeting will be shared in Friday’s paper.

Half-mast flags

At the request of the Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage Paul Goldsmith, Carterton District Council’s flags will be flown at half-mast tomorrow to make the funeral of the late Fa’anānā Efeso Collins, Green Party List MP. The funeral is taking place from midday tomorrow.

Water work

Tararua District Council [TDC] has scheduled routine water system maintenance, starting Monday, March 4 and finishing Monday, March 10. The work will affect most of the Tararua district, including Eketāhuna, Woodville, and Pahiatua. TDC said dead-end water mains flushing will be happening district-wide. “The water team will be flushing the water pipes to remove any sediment and aged water.” It is also advising people not to be alarmed if the water coming out of the tap is unusual in colour. “There might be some rusty or cloudy-looking water while this is happening – this water is still safe,” it said. “If you have questions, call the TDC on either 06 374 4080 or 06 376 0110.”
