Toxic algae
reminder
A reminder has been issued regarding Henley Lake, which currently has increased concentrations of cyanobacteris [toxic algae]. It is recommended that visitors, particularly children, pregnant women, and the elderly, avoid contact with the water. Toxic algae can also be very dangerous if ingested by dogs, and an amount the size of a 50-cent coin is enough to be fatal. A spokesperson for Greater Wellington Regional Council confirmed that all sites in Wairarapa are currently at a low risk. “At the Waipoua River on Colombo Road in particular the coverage is still very low, but has the potential to change over the next few days,” the spokesperson said. For toxic algae warnings and alerts, check regular updates on the website for Land, Air, Water Aotearoa [Lawa].
