Doctors strike
Senior doctors at Wairarapa Hospital have voted to strike today between 12-2 pm. The strike comes after last-minute negotiations between Te Whatu Ora and the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists [ASMS] failed to reach an agreement. Both Te Whatu Ora and the ASMS have made assurances that essential services will continue, and the strikes are being managed to cause as little disruption to patients as possible. Kieran McCann, interim lead hospital and health services and operations team at the hospital, said last week that contingency plans are underway to ensure safe and appropriate care for patients is in place in the event of a strike. “We will work with ASMS to ensure life-preserving services continue to be provided and to minimise the impact of the strike on other care services. Information will be provided in advance to patients whose planned care may be impacted, and the public will also be kept informed of how the industrial action may affect other services,” he said.
