Road closures
South Wairarapa District Council [SWDC] is advising of multiple road closures tomorrow to enable local events to proceed safely. To allow for the Toast Martinborough festival, the following roads will be closed to all non-Toast Martinborough traffic: Memorial Square, Oxford St, Kansas St, and Texas St will be closed from 7am-7pm, while Puruatanga Rd [between Cambridge and Regent St] and New York St West will be closed from 10am-6.30pm. Meanwhile, the Cliffhanger November Motorcycle Sprints will result in East West Access Rd being closed between the bridge and Te Hopai Rd from 9am- 4pm tomorrow. SWDC advises that between runs [which are approximately 40 minutes each], the road will be reopened temporarily to allow for normal traffic.
Albatross
fundraiser
A special screening of the film ‘The Giants’ is being held today at the Regent Theatre to raise funds for endangered albatross chicks. The fundraiser, organised by Forest and Bird, is also in celebration of the organisation’s centennial as “New Zealand’s leading conservation guardian.” Tickets can be purchased at the cinema from 3pm onwards for the 3.30pm screening.
Water warning
The Wellington Region Emergency Management Office [WREMO] is advising anyone who is storing an emergency water supply that it is critical to use clean bottles. If you opt for plastic bottles, WREMO says you should reuse old bottles that used to contain soda water, fizzy, or juice, and definitely not deploy old milk bottles. The milk protein in milk can’t be removed properly from the empty bottles and can cause potentially harmful bacteria to grow. WREMO also urges all those putting down water stores to have a look at their website for more information: wremo.nz/water.
Sticky business
Police responded to a call of two men carrying sticks [size unknown] while walking around Kuripuni on Thursday. Police searched the area but no one matching the description was located, although a police spokesperson has confirmed that two people have since been taken into custody. The initial report cited concerns of the two people allegedly looking to damage vehicles but nothing suggests this happened, the spokesperson said.
