Hooning
on High St

Police received multiple reports of a driver weaving their way recklessly down Carterton’s High St and around King St yesterday. Police managed to stop the driver and speak to those involved. Inquiries are ongoing. It’s not the only instance of antisocial road user behaviour plaguing Wairarapa currently; over the past few weeks police have attended multiple reports of reckless driving.

Weather ahead

While much of the Upper North Island has been facing heavy rain today, Masterton is in for showers, and northeasterlies dying out for the afternoon before becoming southerly. The rain is due to set in more tomorrow, but clear by the afternoon, Metservice said. On Monday, the rain is set to ease to showers developing in the afternoon, and southerlies developing through the day. Tuesday is expected to be partly cloudy with westerlies. Wednesday is forecast to be fine with light winds.

Roadworks
and closures

The Remutaka Hill Rd will be closed from 9pm-4am for essential maintenance between Sunday, May 21 and Thursday, May 25. Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency [NZTA] said there will continue to be stop/go traffic control at various sites on SH2 between Carterton and Masterton, and both northbound and southbound passing lanes will be closed day and night for safety improvement project works. SH2 in Masterton near High St will be reduced to one lane from Monday to Friday, 9am-4pm for a new vehicle crossing. SH2 north of Greytown, near Ahikouka Rd will have traffic lights and stop/go controls on Thursday from 7pm-5.30am in order for a road barrier to be repaired. SH2 Featherston will also have traffic lights and stop/go controls on Thursday from 7pm-5.30am for a LED lighting upgrade.

Search warrants

Police conducted a pre-planned search warrant at two residential addresses on Oxford St on Thursday; two people were taken into custody from one of the addresses. A police spokesperson said a 46-year-old man appeared in Masterton District Court on the same day on three charges relating to the possession of LSD, methamphetamine, and cannabis.
