Carterton crash
A car careered into two vehicles in Carterton and held up traffic on State Highway 2 during peak hour yesterday morning. Emergency services responded to the reported three-car crash shortly after 8am on High St Nth. Wellington Free Ambulance said one person was in a moderate condition but did not require hospital transportation. The patient was treated by staff at the scene. St Vincent de Paul’s manager Giles Kendall-Carpenter said he was out the back of the shop when he heard two loud bangs. “I knew at that time the kids from Hadlow [Preparatory School] would be out the front getting the bus. So my first priority was checking on them. Some were pretty upset and crying, so we got them inside.” Kendall-Carpenter said an ambulance was on the scene in seconds as one happened to be passing through “by pure luck”. “I didn’t see the crash, but putting two and two together, there were two bangs and 30 metres down the road it looks like another car was hit. The driver ended up in the back of a small truck opposite the shop. There’s not much left to the front of the car.” Powerco said contractors were dispatched to assess a power pole that was “shunted” in the incident, and confirmed there was no outage.
