Council keen to lower speeds

South Wairarapa and Carterton District Councils are seeking feedback on their draft interim speed management plan and speed review. The plan proposes to lower the speed limit on roads near schools and marae in 2024, and also asks for public views on a list of other “high priority” roads. In line with the New Zealand Government’s Road to Zero strategy, the draft plan proposes reducing the permanent speed limit on dozens of roads. Several roads are proposed to reduce from 100kmh to 80kmh, including Chester Rd, Ponatahi Rd, Park Rd, Moreton Rd, and sections of Cape Palliser Rd. It proposes reducing others to 60kmh, including Hughes Line, Papawai Rd, and Donald St in Featherston. You can submit a public feedback form online at https://s.surveylegend.com/-NXgfB5YyeOduGg1XfSQ. The consultation period ends at 5pm this Sunday.

Burglary call to Perry St

Masterton police received reports of people attempting to break into a residential property on Perry St at 1.30pm yesterday. Police responded to the incident soon after receiving the call and said there was one person at the property displaying threatening behaviour. Police confirmed no one was injured, and nothing appeared to be stolen from the house. A 20-year-old man was taken into custody and is due to appear in Masterton District Court tomorrow, facing charges of speaking threateningly and burglary.

Driver fails to stop for police

On Monday at 9.45pm, the driver of a vehicle failed to comply with a police signal to pull over. After police pursuit, the vehicle stopped, and a 22-year-old woman was arrested for failing to stop when signalled. However, she was eventually released with a warning. On the same evening, police received two separate reports of two different vehicles crashing into a ditch. The first occurred at 5.45pm on New York St in Martinborough, and police said one person went to the hospital to receive medical attention. The second crash occurred at 11.45pm on Bidwills Cutting Rd. Police said there were no reported injuries or road blockages.
