Support Whangārei

South Wairarapa District Council [SWDC] is running a raffle for Whangārei District Council to support their Resilience Fund. Earlier this year, the council ‘adopted’ Whangārei as part of a Local Government NZ campaign that encouraged people to support their adopted community’s recovery from natural disasters. Local businesses have generously donated over $400 worth of prizes for the raffle. Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased with cash only from SWDC’s office in Martinborough or any of the South Wairarapa libraries.

Car crash

Police received reports of a two-vehicle crash south of the High St roundabout in Kuripuni, Masterton, shortly before 5.30pm last night. No injuries or blockages were reported.

Matariki
bus service

Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre has organised a free bus service for those wanting to attend Friday’s Matariki celebration. The 57-seater Tranzit bus will leave from Farriers’ car park at 4 Queen St at 1pm, on a first come, first served basis. It will leave Pūkaha car park at 4pm and return to Farriers’ car park by 4.30pm.

No-show trains

Several of yesterday’s trains, including the 6.47am and the 3.38pm from Masterton and the 6.18pm from Wellington, were replaced with buses. Metlink said the service was cancelled due to “other cause”. Even when the trains turn up, Wairarapa Line services have been experiencing significant delays of 15 to 25 minutes because of temporary speed limits, which are in place while KiwiRail upgrades the tracks. Metlink said commuters should seek other transport or work from home where possible.

Rain passing

The continuous rain that began during the weekend is forecast to finally pass this evening. Showers are predicted across Tararua District, moving elsewhere in Wairarapa in the afternoon. The rain is forecast to clear in the evening, making way for clear or cloudy weather for the rest of the week.
