Cyclone expected
Cyclone Hale is expected to approach the northeast of the North Island today and tomorrow, bringing with it a period of heavy rain, gale or severe gale winds, and hazardous coastal conditions to parts of northern and central New Zealand from today until Thursday morning, including Wairarapa. Although MetService says there is uncertainty regarding the timing and movement of the cyclone, as of midday yesterday, it was located southwest of New Caledonia. People are advised to keep up to date with forecasts from MetService as more severe weather warnings and watches are likely to be issued for weather associated with the cyclone.
Bridge flood
Heavy rain pelted the region over the weekend, resulting in minor surface flooding at Kokotau Bridge between Carterton and Martinborough on Saturday afternoon. Carterton District Council sent a roading team out to assess the flooding and warning signs were put up. Drivers were asked to be careful and to drive to the conditions as the wet weather continued.
Crash in paddock
Two people suffered minor injuries after a single-vehicle crash on Masterton-Castlepoint Rd yesterday. Police and fire officers from Masterton responded after receiving the call at 2.41pm. The crash happened at Tauwera, just south of Te Kanuka Rd. The car had sped off the road and come to a stop in a paddock.
A weekend
of arrests
A number of arrests were made by police over a busy weekend. On Saturday, police responded to a call of a burglary on Church St in Masterton at 11.55am after a person reported seeing a man in their backyard. Police responded and took a man into custody. Also on Saturday, a vehicle failed to stop for police when signalled by police on Churchill Ave in Masterton at 6.50pm. A police spokesperson said the driver was located and taken into custody. Shortly before midnight on Saturday, a petrol theft was reported from Chapel St in Masterton. Police responded and quickly located the people involved.
