News in Brief, Friday, 5 April

Hill closure

NZTA Waka Kotahi is reminding people of planned round closures on the Remutaka Hill from April 14-19, 9pm-4am. These closures are so NZTA can conduct maintenance on the road, which includes renewing old safety barriers, installing new motorcyclist underrun safety barriers, installing three new slow vehicle lane signs at and near the summit, and removing old line-markings at slow vehicle lane bays. People driving in light vehicles are reminded that limited slots are available for crossings during the closures but must be booked in advance. To book a slot or to find out more information you should visit the NZTA website. nzta.govt.nz

Bin burn

Late on Wednesday night, a crew from Masterton Fire Station responded to reports of a fire in Lansdowne near Henley Lake. A station spokesperson said they received the call at 10.20 pm and arrived a couple of minutes later to discover a burning dog litter bin, which took less than 10 minutes to extinguish the fire using a hose.

The spokesperson said that at this stage they are treating it as suspicious and deliberately lit but will not be taking any further action.

Eketāhuna fire

A fire crew from Eketāhuna and a tanker from Masterton fire stations were dispatched to put out a vegetation fire on Kākāriki Rd just north of Eketāhuna just before 12.30pm on Friday afternoon. An Eketāhuna Fire Station spokesperson said that a row of pine trees was set alight, and the crews put out four spot fires over an area of 100 metres. No properties or structures were affected.

Clock change reminder

Daylight saving comes to an end at 3am this Sunday, so don’t forget to put your clocks back one hour before going to bed on Saturday night and prepare yourself for it suddenly getting darker much earlier as a result.
