Heavy rain warning
Metservice early modelling indicates more heavy rain could be on the way this week. Metservice said from Thursday onwards, some of its longer-range models indicated a risk of heavy rain for the already-saturated east coast. “The uncertainty is high at this stage, some models are indicating about 50mm over Friday and Saturday for the Wairoa district.” It said meteorologists were monitoring the situation closely, and would update as the certainty increased. Metservice said it was too early to issue heavy rain watches or warnings.
Flood fundraiser
A flood relief concert at Le Gra Winery has raised a whopping $5000 for the Rural Support Trust. The concert, held on Sunday, was pulled together in record time in a bid to raise money for local farmers affected by Cyclone Gabrielle. Close to 200 people attended with performances from The Warratahs singer Barry Saunders, and jazz singer Lady Larisa, who was originally due to perform at the Art Deco Weekend in Napier before the cyclone hit.
Census day
The next census will be held on Tuesday March 7. Census is a nationwide survey that happens every five years to understand more about life in Aotearoa New Zealand. By taking part in the census, you help create a better understanding of your community, Census New Zealand said. For most of the nation, census packs will be arriving in the main, and census collectors will be visiting households. The census can also be done online using the code on your census pack.
Hill closures
Wairarapa commuters are advised to prepare for another round of night closures on Remutaka Hill Rd. Waka Kotahi NZTA said a full week of closures would take place each night from 9pm-4am beginning this Sunday through until Friday, March 3. The road would be fully closed to traffic to allow for essential maintenance and resurfacing on seven sections of the hill. NZTA said escorted crossings would be limited and bookings were a must:
