Log-burner blaze

Fire Emergency Services [Fenz] received reports of a “smoke-logged” house on Brooklyn Rd, Carterton, at 6.30 pm on Monday. Two fire brigades from Carterton and Greytown attended the scene. A Fenz spokesperson said the fire appeared to be caused by a fault with the resident’s log burner and that the fire was put out before Fenz arrived. The spokesperson confirmed there were no reported injuries and that the crew extinguished the log burner and remained at the scene to ensure the fire was put out and everything was safe.

Panama parking

Masterton District Council [MDC] has begun work extending the car park at Panama Village, the senior housing flats on Ngaumutawa Rd. Higgins has been awarded the contract for the work. Up to 16 new car parks will be added for use by tenants and caregivers visiting the village. Two will be accessible parks. MDC said it hopes to complete work in October, weather permitting. Any visitors to Panama Village should be aware of possible temporary changes to parking arrangements during construction.

Castlepoint close-down

Castlepoint Store, the township’s general store, will be closed for the next few weeks for the purpose of restructuring and overdue maintenance. If all goes to plan, the store should open in mid-September. In the meantime, Riversdale Beach Store will be the nearest takeaway for beachgoers.

Incoming swells

MetService has hinted at large waves which might reach the region’s coast today. Strong south-westerlies directed over New Zealand will bring large waves – estimated to reach five to seven metres – to the North Island’s southern, western and eastern coasts north of Wellington. Any larger then normal ocean activity should subside later today.
