Boy racers

Police received a report of antisocial road user behaviour shortly after 11pm on Saturday. A person was doing burnouts on Kokotau Rd in Parkvale. Police searched the area but did not find the vehicle. Enquiries are ongoing.

Cultural festival

Masterton District celebrated its first Cultural Festival, with food trucks and cultural stalls setting up stalls at Park St, which was closed. The event ran from 10am-2pm and was supported by Trust House and Masterton Trust Lands Trust. The event was part of “Welcoming Week,” an initiative to welcome newcomers to the region.

Palliser Road works finished

Fulton Hogan has completed remediation work on the sea wall at Turners Bay on Cape Palliser Rd. The sea wall has been built using river gravel wrapped in fabric, which otherwise would have been turned into cement. Another grade of rock called Rip Rap had been placed on top for protection. The sea wall is designed to protect the road from storms, slips, rising tides, and coastal erosion.

Pūkaha with Richie McCaw

Legendary All-Black captain and Westpac bank ambassador Richie McCaw will be at Pūkaha Mt Bruce next weekend for the National Wildlife Centre’s open day. McCaw will run a 4km relay race against a Tararua team, a Wairarapa team, and Pūkaha’s own team, with local mayors on the stopwatch. Money raised from the relay will fund bird and tree conservation efforts at the wildlife centre. The relay kicks off at 11am. There will also be talks from wildlife rangers, market stalls, carving studio displays, a sausage sizzle, and fun activities. A free bus [first in, first served] will leave the Farriers car park in Masterton at 10am and return from Pūkaha at 3.30pm.

Election enrolment

Yesterday was Writ Day, when Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro signed the writ directing the electoral commission to conduct the 2023 General Election on Saturday, October 14. Writ day also marks the date that electoral rolls close for printing, meaning that if you haven’t enrolled yet, you will need to complete a special vote.
