Easter safety
Police and Waka Kotahi are urging motorists to drive safely over Easter. Police said they would be out and in force over the weekend to deter risky behaviour that could lead to deaths or injuries. National road policing director Superintendent Steve Greally said every driver could do four easy things to prevent the risk of injury: wear a seatbelt, don’t drink-drive, remove distractions, and slow down.
Night closure
SH2 Remutaka Hill Rd will be closed to traffic from 9pm to 4am on Sunday, April 16. The closure will allow multiple roading crews to perform essential maintenance without disrupting daytime traffic. Emergency services will have access over the hill. Travellers with special circumstances can book an escorted crossing in advance by contacting [email protected]. Drivers who turn up without a booking will be turned away,
Climate group
Masterton District Council [MDC] has selected six locals to form the Climate Advisory Group. The group’s first meeting is expected to take place in mid-April. Ngati Kahungunu representatives have also been confirmed. The group will meet at least four times a year to advise MDC on climate change issues and solutions for the district.
Archive closed
The Wairarapa Archive will be closed today because of staff shortages. The Masterton Library said that, in the meantime, people could email the staff at [email protected] if they needed to get in touch, and someone would respond as soon as possible.
Streetlights out
Carterton District Council has been alerted to a network fault affecting streetlights between Brooklyn Rd to Victoria St, and High St from Victoria St to Pembroke St. An urgent request has been logged with the power supplier Mercury, who has arranged repairs with Powerco. The council asks that those affected be patient while outages are being repaired. There have been delays due to powerline contractors being redeployed to areas of the country impacted by cyclone Gabrielle.
