Driver in ICU

A driver critically injured in a Masterton crash last Friday remains in intensive care. Emergency services responded to the single-vehicle crash on the Ruamahanga River Bridge on Te Whiti Rd at 11.40am. The crash closed the road for several hours while the Serious Crash Unit investigated. The driver, who was the car’s sole occupant, was flown to Wellington Hospital by helicopter. A hospital spokesperson confirmed yesterday the patient remained in a serious condition in ICU.

End of an era

Today marks the final time Leigh Bramwell’s gardening page will feature in the Times-Age. Bramwell, who recently died, began her journalism career at age 18. In addition to her work as a property journalist for the New Zealand Herald, she was a regular garden columnist for NZME, and contributor to NZ House & Garden.

There’s still time

The Eketahuna Community Board has extended the period to apply for financial help, with applications for the General Assistance Grants scheme now open until May 31. Forms are available from Tararua District Council’s [TDC] website or from the Eketahuna Library. Nominations for the Alf Rowden Humanitarian Award will also remain open until May 31. The award recognises exceptional voluntary service or work in the Eketahuna Community. Nominations can be made in writing to TDC’s democracy services manager and delivered to the Eketahuna Library or emailed to [email protected]

Naming gifted

To celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations between New Zealand and Poland, Pukaha Mt Bruce in conjunction with Rangitane iwi, have gifted the naming of a kiwi chick – Porana. The name translates to Poland in te reo Maori, and will be given in a special naming ceremony at the wildlife centre on May 26. The kiwi chick is the offspring of Mapuna, the last remaining white kiwi.

Two-car crash

Police have confirmed there were no injuries in a two-vehicle crash that blocked a Masterton intersection yesterday. Police responded to the crash at the intersection of Villa and Victoria streets at 12.45pm. One vehicle was reported to be blocking the road, however traffic was flowing freely by 1.20pm.
