Wild weather
MetService has issued a heavy swell warning for the region, covering Cape Palliser to Mataikona. Wairarapa’s gusty spell overnight saw northwest gales reaching 120kmph, with those north of Featherston including the Tararua District experiencing severe wind levels up to 9am today. The waves will have a peak period of 11 seconds. In other weather news, MetService also said today will bring possibly heavy showers and snow lowering to 600 metres this afternoon.
Councils seek waste feedback
The eight councils in the Wellington region are taking feedback on the draft Wellington Region Waste Management and Minimisation Plan 2023-2029. This includes the three local councils in Wairarapa, which are seeking comment on a joint regional Wairarapa Local Action Plan. The plan looks at regional and local targets and proposes 22 actions targeting waste management and minimisation over the next six years. Pop-up sessions regarding the plan are taking place in Martinborough, Featherston, Greytown, and Carterton on August 14 and in Masterton on August 21. After the consultation period finishes, the eight councils involved will agree on a final plan later this year. For more information about these information sessions or the consultation, visit lesswastegreaterplace.co.nz/wairarapa. Consultation closes on September 1 at 5pm.

Constable Jo Kelly is hosting a community meeting today at the Martinborough Fire Station between 1-2pm. It is the first of three meetings Constable Kelly will be hosting, with ones held Greytown and Featherston following in the next few months. Those with relevant concerns, issues, and questions are encouraged to attend.
