Like the organisation’s centres across the country, SPCA Masterton is running a half-price adoption campaign for dogs from September 23 until October 1 due to canines remaining longer in their care than usual.
SPCA’s general manager of animal services Dr Corey-Regnerus Kell said that, on average, dogs are staying at centres roughly 20 days more than they did at the same time last year.
“This has a real knock-on effect on how many animals we can bring into our care as well as an impact on animal wellbeing,” Regnerus-Kell said.
“We know longer times in shelter environments can lead to higher stress and anxiety levels, a higher risk of contracting illnesses and, in some cases, reduced likelihood of adoption.”
SPCA Masterton centre manager Rebecca Johnston said that they currently have 12 dogs under care, and she is seeing a significant increase in people needing to rehome their dogs due to the cost of living.
“They’re a luxury people can’t afford – it’s really sad,” Johnston said.
“So many rescue centres are full – we are over capacity with the amount of dogs we currently have. There’s just nowhere for them to go.”
Johnston is encouraging struggling dog owners to get in touch with SPCA Masterton to desex their dogs.
Alongside the cost of living, SPCA centres are also seeing longer staying times for dogs due to lack of desexing and the impact of extreme weather events on Kiwis.
“As we approach the incredibly busy kitten season, we need to ensure our centres have capacity for incoming animals. This 50 per cent discount offer is about helping give a push to those people on the fence about bringing a dog into their home,” Regnerus-Kell said.
“As part of the adoption process, we always address the cost and commitment of bringing a pet into your home, so we know they go to responsible pet owners.”
He said he hopes the campaign will inspire those contemplating bringing a dog into their lives to take the leap and welcome a canine companion into their homes.
A Companion Animals New Zealand survey conducted in 2020 indicated that 59 per cent of Kiwis who did not have an animal but were interested in getting one said their main hesitation was due to their home or lifestyle not being suitable [37 per cent], the landlord or property where they lived not allowing animals [33 per cent], cost [32 per cent], and responsibility [26 per cent].
“Adopting a dog is a long-term commitment that requires thoughtful consideration, irrespective of the season,” Regnerus-Kell said.
“However, if you’re prepared to embrace the love and companionship of a new furry friend, spring presents an opportune moment. With the improving weather, it allows for increased outdoor activities, exploration, and socialisation. We recognise that New Zealanders view their pets as cherished family members, and we absolutely love seeing these animals get a second chance at life.”
