Wairarapa suffer big loss

Wairarapa 0
Southland 4

Wairarapa’s prospects of a top-two finish in their pool at the National Women’s Tier Two Championship took a hit with a heavy loss to Southland in Hamilton yesterday.

Wairarapa will rue their inability to contain Southland’s penalty corner exponents, with all four goals coming from those set pieces.

After a tight first quarter, defending champions Southland broke the deadlock 10 minutes into the second quarter. They doubled their lead in the third quarter and added two more goals in the final period.

The loss leaves Wairarapa rooted to the bottom of the group, with two games to play – against second-placed Taranaki this afternoon and the Waikato Wildcats tomorrow.

They would need to win both games to have any chance of sneaking into the top four.
