Roadworks end
Waka Kotahi NZTA expects Thursday will be the final night for the main construction of the roundabouts and median barrier on SH2 between Masterton and Carterton. The work should finish at 4am on Friday. The roadworks and temporary speed limits have been in place since August last year. Contractors will return in November or December to lay the final layer of asphalt and paint the road markings. Once temporary speed limits have been removed, the section of SH2 will have an 80kmh limit, slowing to 60kmh near the roundabouts.
Mischief
on Manaia
A member of the public reported that a vehicle was doing burnouts on Upper Manaia Rd, just outside Masterton, on Saturday night. Police responded at 7.30pm but could not find any vehicle involved. Police have been notified of several boy-racer incidents around Upper Manaia Rd this month.
Fence crash
A car crashed through a fence on the outskirts of Featherston in the early hours of Sunday morning. Emergency response to the crash on SH2 Fitzherbert St near Boundary Rd at 1.40am. One person was assessed by an ambulance crew but had no injuries. The road was not blocked, and a tow truck was arranged to remove the car.
Train talk
Greater Wellington Regional Council [GWRC] is holding a virtual session to discuss the new trains due to come to Wairarapa at the end of the decade. GWRC councillor Darand Ponter will be speaking about how the trains will benefit commuters and the environment with shorter journey times, more frequent services, and fewer emissions. There will be a short presentation followed by an opportunity to send in questions to be answered. The session will be streamed on the GWRC YouTube Channel from 3-4pm on Thursday.
Discount fares
Metlink fares are changing back to full price from September 1, but you can still get half-price fares if you’re under 25. Metlink has now launched an online portal for under-25s to load the youth concession onto their Snapper card. The 50 per cent off concession must be loaded onto a card and renewed each year.
