Alleged shooter arrested

A man appeared in Masterton District Court yesterday accused of firing a gun at a vehicle.

The 22-year-old man has been granted interim name suppression; he has been charged with committing a dangerous act with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, reckless discharge of a firearm, threatening to kill, and driving while suspended.

No bail application was made, and he was remanded in custody until his next appearance on August 10.

Police initially received multiple driving complaints on Sunday afternoon about two vehicles in Masterton.

The man was arrested after allegedly discharging a firearm at a vehicle and its occupants on Ballance St.

Police said the people involved knew each other.

Detective Senior Sergeant Philip Skoglund said it was fortunate that no one was seriously hurt or killed.

“We understand that other residents were going about their day when this incident occurred, and it must have been concerning,” he said.

The man was due to be sentenced on Tuesday for a prior charge of demanding with intent to steal, but because of Sunday’s alleged firearms offence, that has been pushed back so all the charges can be tried together.

Police asked anyone with information relating to the incident or who saw it happen to contact Police by calling 105 or filing a report online at https://www.police.govt.nz/use-105 referencing file number 230730/6746.
