Carterton artist Jennifer Nidd’s ‘It’s All Mapped Out for You’ art exhibition is now on show at Carterton’s Heart of Arts Gallery.
The Heart of Arts Gallery displays local artworks created in various mediums and supports community events, art workshops, and local youth groups.
While maps are typically associated with objective representations, Nidd’s unique collection consists of 23 cartographic collages, using a scalpel as her main tool to bring her ideas to life.
“What I attempt to do is to create a dimensional image from a two-dimensional image,” she said.
“I work a lot with satellite images, and then cut away, or leave out extraneous elements of my image and replace them with, very often, layers to create dimension, mostly using a similar colour and terrain cut from an atlas or maps,” Nidd said.
Nidd said she uses maps in particular as they’re a perfect union of science and art that contain at least one humorous reference to a place name.
“Satellite images wow me and provide me with a lot of my canvases. A collection of vintage atlases, maps, and a scalpel are my tools.
“I take pleasure in releasing fragments from forgotten pages from dusty bookshelves and liberating them to become an intriguing, historical artwork,” Nidd said.
The collection also features many images of various South Island braided rivers.
‘It’s All Mapped Out for You’ will be on display until August 17 at the Heart of Art Carterton Gallery.
Open Wednesday Friday, 10am–4pm Saturday and Sunday, 10am–2pm.
