Man missing from walk

A search and rescue mission is underway after a person failed to return from a walk in the Mount Holdsworth area earlier this week.

Michael MacGregor [pictured] was last seen at 12.20pm on Monday, at the Rocky Lookout.

Police said he was wearing shorts and a hoodie, and may have been wearing a hat.

Wairarapa area commander Inspector Scott Miller said last night that MacGregor’s family reported him missing on Monday morning and a Wairarapa-based search and rescue team was assigned to the search.

“They found his car in the car park and went on a 45-minute walk to the last point where he was seen.”

With Wairarapa under a strong wind warning yesterday, the search was limited to those on foot as the weather was too gusty for a helicopter to fly safely.

“My understanding is the weather was too windy to get a helicopter, the conditions aren’t right, so it’s just a ground crew at the moment,” Miller said.

Anyone who was walking in the Mt Holdsworth area on Monday who may have seen MacGregor or be able to assist with the search is encouraged to contact police.

In particular, police are interested in talking to a person wearing orange sitting at Rocky Lookout who appeared in the background of a video MacGregor posted on social media at the time.

Anyone who has seen MacGregor or has information on his whereabouts is urged to call Police on 111, quoting event number P055522968.

Police confirmed that as of print deadline last night, the search and rescue was still underway and MacGregor had not been found.
