The 32-year-old man charged with murdering Jamie Michael Gill, 33, in rural Carterton last month appeared in the Wellington High Court yesterday.
Gill was found dead outside a property on Te Kopi Rd in Te Whiti on the morning of Sunday, June 25.
The defendant, who is represented by lawyers Ian Hard and Mike Kilbride, entered no plea on the charge of assaulting and murdering Gill on June 24, 2023.
Lawyer Ian Hard said his client, whose name is suppressed, needs to be evaluated by a psychiatrist, under section 38 of the criminal procedures act, for mentally impaired persons, to see if he was insane at the time of the murder and if he is fit to enter a plea now.
The man’s interim name suppression was extended until further notice because of his possible mental health issues.
Prosecutor Stephanie Bishop did not strongly oppose the name suppression.
The defendant’s next appearance in court will be for a case review and name suppression hearing on November 3, 2023.
A one-to-two-week trial has been set for September 23, 2024.
Judge Rebecca Ellis remanded the accused in custody until the November hearing.
