Weather outlook
While MetService has currently not issued any weather warnings for Wairarapa for the weekend, the outlook for much of the rest of New Zealand is a bit different. A heavy rain warning was in place for the Gisborne/Tairawhiti region until this morning, and a heavy rain watch covers Wairoa and the Hawke’s Bay ranges for the same period.

Grants open
Carterton District Council’s [CDC] community grants are open now, with applications closing at 5pm on 31 July. CDC administers a number of funds that are available for projects, events, and services for the Carterton community: the community grants fund, the creative communities scheme, the Sport New Zealand rural travel fund, and the Carterton and Districts Returned and Services Memorial Trust Fund. Navy speaker
Retired Royal New Zealand Navy commander Richard Jackson will be the guest speaker at next week’s meeting of the Wairarapa branch of the New Zealand Institute of International Affairs. Jackson spent seven years of his naval career in the USA. During Richard Nixon’s presidency, he spent four years as a midshipman at the US Naval Academy, and during Ronald Reagan’s presidency, he was posted in Hawaii on the staff of the US Commander in Chief Pacific. Jackson will present a talk on his perspective on three presidents [Nixon, Reagan, and Donald Trump] and his experience in the USA. It will start at 8 pm on Thursday, July 27, at Rosewood Funeral Home, Queen St, Masterton.
Dog consultation closing soon
The opportunity for the public to provide feedback on the rules for dogs in South Wairarapa closes on Sunday. South Wairarapa District Council [SWDC] last reviewed its dog control policy and bylaws in 2018 and is now reviewing them again. The dog control policies include where dogs are allowed, where they can go off-leash, dog exercise areas [dog parks], beach, coastal and camping access rules, and nuisance and dangerous dogs. The full policy is on the council’s webpage. Public feedback will inform a draft dog policy and bylaw that SWDC will formally consult on later this year. Feedback closes at 5.00 pm tomorrow.
