Te Ore Ore theft
Masterton police responded to reports of a person stealing from letterboxes at residential addresses on Te Ore Ore Rd at 4.30pm on Wednesday. Police said they conducted a search for the person involved but were unable to locate them. Police confirmed enquiries are ongoing.
Dog registration
South Wairarapa dog owners need to register their dogs before July 31 to avoid late fees. Registered dogs get a yellow tag. Fees can be paid either in person at the Martinborough Council offices, at the Greytown and Featherston libraries, or online. People paying online need to enter their dog owner number on the online form at swdc.govt.nz/pay-for-dog-licensing. Online forms need to be returned to council by email at [email protected] or posted to South Wairarapa District Council, PO Box 6, Martinborough 5741.
Mangaterere wastewater
Carterton District Council [CDC] has cost stage two of its plan to eliminate the discharge of wastewater into the Mangatarere catchment. The forecast for the total project is now estimated to be $15,168,188, or $555,742 [3.8 per cent] over the approved budget, including contingency. Management recommended increasing the project budget approval to $15,168,188 at its June 28 council meeting.
Train delayed
Yesterday’s 4.25pm train from Wellington to Masterton was delayed for three-quarters of an hour after a brakes failure was discovered before the train left Wellington. The diesel trains currently in use are 50 years old and will reach their end of service life in 2028.
Rainy weekend
Wairarapa is in for a wetter weekend than the last. MetService is forecasting rain for both days, with Masterton experiencing a high of 12 degrees Celsius tomorrow and 14degC on Sunday. Tomorrow there will be a few showers in the region, becoming more widespread in the evening along with south westerlies developing. Sunday has heavier rain and south westerlies in the morning, both easing in the afternoon. The wet weather is a result of a low moving over the North Island along the east. MetService said exactly where and how heavy the rain will be is varying.
