Rural advice sought

Masterton District Council is seeking expressions of interest from people who would be keen to be part of its Rural Advisory Group for the current term.

The group was established in the last council term to provide a rural perspective on council-related issues.

It is intended that its advice will help ensure the wellbeing of Masterton’s rural community is taken into account in policy decisions and planning, the council said.

The group will have eight members, including two councillors [David Holmes – who will be the chair – and Craig Bowyer], along with a representative from Ngati Kahungunu ki Wairarapa and Rangitane o Wairarapa, and four members appointed through the expressions of interest process.

Mayor Gary Caffell, Holmes, and Bowyer will appoint the four community members, who will be expected to live in the Masterton district, or work in a role serving rural communities.

Holmes said the council’s rural seat was nullified when the council ceased having specific seats in 2019, with councillors instead representing the whole district rather than specific areas.

In November, the council proposed re-establishing the Rural Advisory Group.

Applicants will be assessed for their ability to provide advice on rural issues, understanding of the rural sector in Masterton, association with a rural sector group, organisation, or rural community, and their understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi [the Treaty of Waitangi].

Expressions of interest must be made by 5pm on June 23.
