Works postponed
Waka Kotahi has postponed this weekend’s planned closure of SH2 Chapel St due to the rain. The works will now take place next weekend, from 8pm on Friday 16 June, until 6am Monday, 19 June. When the works commence, SH2 Chapel St will be closed between Cole St and Jackson St for two weekends in a row while contractors rebuild the road from its foundation. The works will strengthen the road and prevent potholes from forming in the future.
SH2 updates
Contractors have nearly completed installing the wire centre barrier on SH2 between Masterton and Carterton. The final section of the median barrier – between Wiltons Rd and the turnaround facility in Clareville – is under construction and is due to be completed in the next week. Contractors will also install LED lights at the three roundabouts in the coming weeks. Roadworks will finish by the end of August, but contractors will return in December to lay the final asphalt layer and paint the final line markings.
Moove over
A cow standing in the middle of SH2 in the early hours of yesterday morning necessitated a 111 call. Police responded to the incident in Tauherenikau near Camp Rd shortly after 1.30am. A spokesperson was unable to confirm what happened to the cow.

Clarification
An article that ran in Monday’s Times-Age stated that, regardless of what KiwiRail proposes about level crossings that are being considered for closure, rail regulator Waka Kotahi could choose to accept or decline KiwiRail’s preference. A KiwiRail spokesperson has said this is not accurate, stating that KiwiRail has an obligation to prove to Waka Kotahi that the risks at level crossings have been reduced as far as is reasonably practical before any new trains are allowed to operate. The decision to close a level crossing ultimately sits with KiwiRail in situations where the railway was built before the road.
