Heavy rain

Metservice is warning of possible heavy rain on Friday. The meteorological service said a “rain-band embedded within the flow” moved north of the country yesterday, but is set to move southwards back onto the eastern North Island towards the end of the week. “There is low confidence that warnable rainfall amounts will spread further west and south into the hills and ranges of eastern Bay of Plenty, Taupo, Taihape, Manawatu, Tararua District, and Wairarapa on Friday and Saturday.”

Roadworks

This weekend there will be a road closure on SH2 from Masterton’s Chapel St south of Lincoln Rd. The closure will be from 8pm Friday evening to 6am Monday morning and is for road reconstruction works. There will be a local road detour sign and heavy vehicles have been asked to use the Ngaumutawa Rd and Paierau Rd bypasses.

Hill closure

This Sunday, SH2 Remutaka Hill Rd will be closed overnight for the final works of the 2022-23 maintenance season. The road will be closed from 9pm to 4am on Sunday night and Monday morning. A Waka Kotahi NZTA spokesperson said the closures have allowed for better quality work on the steep, narrow, high-use road. “Thank you for your patience and understanding while we have carried out this crucial work,” they said.

Funding for Matariki

Get any applications to secure Matariki funding to Masterton District Council by this Friday [June 9], which is the closing date. Last year the council supported a range of schemes and initiatives, including community celebrations, star gazing, and film screenings. Registered events can receive up to $500 to help make the magic happen and the council is looking for ideas that engage the community and align with the kaupapa of Matariki.

Correction

An article that ran in Tuesday’s Wairarapa Times-Age stated that Federated Farmers and the Taxpayers’ Union would be in Masterton on Wednesday night as part of a roadshow to oppose the government’s proposed reform of the Resource Management Act. The event is actually being held tonight at 6pm at Lansdowne House.
