Waicol kick-off premier tournament with big win

RUGBY

Wairarapa College kicked off their qualifying series for the Wellington premier schools championship with a 45-5 defeat of Mana College at Waicol on Saturday.

Talented first-five Cohen Scott scored two of the seven tries, with the others going to lock Cyrus Wilson, halfback Le’Sharn Paku, midfielders
John Paulo and Charlie Carroll, and fullback Lam Yuen in a match that the home side dominated throughout.

Needing to win two of their three matches to qualify for the premier competition, Waicol
face significantly stronger opponents on Saturday, away to perennial frontrunners Scots College.

HOCKEY

St Matthew’s Collegiate and Wairarapa College host Palmerston North Girls High School [PNGHS] teams in the opening round of games in the Manawatu Intercity Championship tonight.

Waicol face the toughest challenge up against the strong PNGHS 1st XI at the Trust House Wairarapa Hockey Complex at 5.15 pm. That will be followed by defending champions St Matt’s, who should have too much firepower for the PNGHS 2nd XI.

In the boys’ top division, Rathkeale play Whanganui Collegiate, and Waicol meet Levin Combined, both
matches in Palmerston North. Kuranui are away to Palmerston North Boys High School
Colts in boys’ division two.

FOOTBALL

Rathkeale have a difficult kick-off in their Wellington premier grading series, away to St Patrick’s Silverstream.

Wairarapa College also travel to play Hutt International Boys 2 in the first of their premier reserve – division one grading games.
