Speed bust
A police officer on Carters Line has busted three speedsters in the space of 15 minutes. The officer issued three speeding tickets between 8.40am and 8.55am yesterday. The drivers’ speeds ranged from 112kmh to 124kmh. Police said speeding drivers should expect to be stopped and subjected to interventions. A police spokesperson said any excess speed from a driver who collides with another motorist is a recipe for disaster and increases the risk of severe harm. Many motorists have been using Carters Line since roadworks began on SH2 between Carterton and Masterton.
Rain watch
Metservice has issued a heavy rain watch for Wellington, Kapiti Coast, Wairarapa south of Greytown, and the Tararua Range beginning at 6pm today. The watch is set to last until 12 noon tomorrow, with Metservice advising rainfall amounts could reach warning criteria. “This watch may be upgraded to a warning closer to the time as there is the potential for surface flooding and slips causing impacts such as disruption to traffic.” Waka Kotahi NZTA said the bad weather would coincide with holiday traffic. “Motorists should take extra care on the roads and be prepared for delays.”
Hill oil spill
A massive oil spill reportedly stretched from one side of the Remutakas to the other yesterday. The spill on the hill road was reported to Waka Kotahi NZTA at 12.45pm, after which contractors checked and cleared the scene. There were no road closures and no related incidents reported. A road user said the spill began at the bottom of the Upper Hutt side of the hill and continued all the way to Featherston. “There is oil on almost every corner; I almost crashed going around a corner at 30kmh,” they said.
